A new beta feature has been launched by WhatsApp, which lets a limited set of users exchange media files as heavy as 2GB. This functionality is currently in the testing stage and there’s no guarantee it will ever become part and parcel of the app as everyone knows it. However, a selection of accounts, most probably located in South America, do have an opportunity to try it. That’s probably part of WhatsApp’s overall innovative phase that it appears to have been going through recently. Previous additions to the app’s features include message reactions and new voice message recording controls. All are initially revealed as beta versions.
WABetaInfo has published a post on the large file sharing function, reporting that it’s currently available to a highly limited sample of users. These are comprised of those with iOS devices as well Android versions 2.22.8.5 to and including 2.22.8.7. Given that the previous media file size limit was as scanty as 100 MB, the new feature has every chance of making a difference. The idea of what you can share via the app will change dramatically if this ever becomes the reality.
If the feature does stick around, it’ll probably prompt other applications to start moving in the same directions. Some products that might want to follow suit include Gmail, which currently supports files no bigger than 25 MB, and Twitter with its 1 GB threshold. The demand for software that enables sharing heavy files is likely to grow as new devices capable of producing really detailed photos and videos come out. After all, nobody wants to spend their precious time editing down a brilliant video, right? Can you think of some ways in which you might use the new feature already?
