What Apps Do Teens Prefer? TikTok and YouTube Top the List

What apps are the most popular now among American teens? The recent research provides some insights into where the new generation spends more time, and the results are somewhat predictable but also somewhat surprising. Suffice to say, the most popular social media in this group turned out to be the oldest on the list.

It comes as no surprise to see TikTok gaining popularity: it’s used by 67% of the surveyed teens, and 16% (that is, one out of six) are using it constantly. 62% of them also use Instagram on a regular basis. When it comes to Snapchat, which is considered the most juvenile of all the social media today, it comes fourth, with 59% of the participants using it. Snapchatters, though, form their own social bubble and tend to use other social media less, so there is a sort of bubble within the audience.

The result shown by Facebook is underwhelming. While in 2014-15, it was used by 71% of this age group, now its popularity declined to 32%. It could have been even lower hadn’t Meta launched Reels, its reply to TikTok’s short video format. But Reels are also on Instagram, able to reach the audience bypassing political discussions and nostalgia threads.

It suggests that these teens view Facebook as daddy’s social media, but it’s not because it’s been around for long. While Facebook went public in September 2006, the leader of the rating is about 18 months older. And, of course, it’s YouTube, the ultimate video streaming and hosting service. As the research shows, YouTube is used by 95% of the surveyed teens. Partly it is the result of introduction of YouTube Shorts, its own reaction to the success of TikTok.

These five are followed by Twitter, Twitch, WhatsApp, Reddit, and Tumblr. If you are one of this age group, which social apps do you use the most often? What makes them attractive for you? Share this with us in the comments!
