This is not the first time Tumblr is unhappy with Apple over the problem with 18+ content restrictions. Hundreds of phrases that can be considered as “inappropriate” or “mature” are banned from the iOS version of Tumblr’s app. Moreover, personal blogs that position themselves as mature are not allowed to enter via the app.
You will not be able to view your favorite blogs in case they have a “mature” flag over them. There will be a pop-up message with explanations from Apple. You will not be able to see all the fanfiction on Tumblr as well. Content 18+ will not appear in the recommended posts as well. In its latest post, Tumblr said that if they want to remain in the App Store, they have to follow Apple’s general rules. Sensitive content they have on the platform will be locked and unavailable for iOS owners.
Users of Tumblr came up with their own list of tags that are banned from iOS. The list was not confirmed by Apple, but still pretty accurate. Some tags like “sex,” “porn,” or “drugs” are banned for understandable reasons since they can lead to 18+ content. Other tags are more confusing since it does not make sense why these words were banned. For example, you can’t find “Eugene Levy” or “Tony the Finger.” Apple did a great job by banning even numbers like 420 and 69.
Users from Tumblr gather in groups to discuss the changes. Even users who require group support are banned by Apple. Tags that used to help many people solve their problems and share their feelings in groups are unreachable, like “depression,” “bipolar,” and “PTSD.” Tumblr officials share concerns over the ban of sensitive topics, hoping to collaborate with Apple and find the right solution.
