Top 2020 Mobile Games That You Missed

Despite the global pandemic and the boom of remote work policies, game developers didn’t lose steam and invaded the App Store and Google Play with dozens of worthy titles. But which of them are really still worth your attention in 2021? Here’s a list of the 10 most exciting 2020 releases that you might have missed.

There’s actually not much sense in splitting the title into the ‘Best iOS Games 2020’ and ‘Best Android Games 2020’ lists as most of them are available for both platforms, so we will just mark particular titles as ‘iOS Only’ or ‘Android Only.’

10. Slam Dunk

Slam Dunk

This 3D action basketball game is based on the popular eponymous anime series. Fortunately, the developers didn’t focus on the plot of the title, so the game can be treated as a full-value standalone thing. The gameplay offers loads of ridiculous anime twists that may even push you to start watching the entire series. Although it’s a full 3D title, the controls are very simple and intuitive. You can easily focus on winning the matches that are rather challenging, so to say.

9. Dystopia: Contest of Heroes

Dystopia- Contest of Heroes

Although this one looks a lot like a new Clash of Clans in a futuristic wrapper, it’s actually a brand new mobile RTS experience. There’s also a lot of base building, mining, army training, and other role-playing elements. Although the game is quite simplistic and gives you not so many units to master (at least yet), the core gameplay is really enjoyable and can capture your attention for many hours. Due to cross-platform multiplayer, you can enjoy online matches with your friends, who use a different OS than you.

8. New Star Baseball – iOS Only

New Star Baseball – iOS Only

Retro Ball and New Star Soccer developers have finally returned with a new vertical one-touch sports game. New Star Baseball is even better as it’s stuffed with polished gameplay mechanics that we liked so much in the older games. The game is hilariously simple to play but feels incredibly satisfying. It’s actually one of the most catchy baseball games in the entire history of baseball simulators. Even the sound design is so good that you can literally feel the ball when you hit it. Good job, New Star Games!

7. Star Wars: Starfighter Missions

Star Wars- Starfighter Missions

There are two types of Star Wars games. The first type is total garbage, and the second includes exceptionally well-made and even canonical games. Fortunately, Starfighter Missions belongs to the second. Guys from Joymax took an idea of the old top-down space shooters for arcades and old cell phones, gave it a cool Star Wars look, added up those great blaster sounds, and, voila! One of the best games of the year is here! You should check it out even if you’re not a fan of the franchise, as it’s very immersive.

6. Goddess of Genesis S

Goddess of Genesis S Screen

Why would we put a mobile JRPG into our top-10 listing? Well, this one managed to beat all the weird cliches and implement a remarkably good style without becoming weird or embarrassing. The original story behind the game is stuffed with cute and detailed characters, while the battle system makes passing through levels even more exciting. You can play it offline or enjoy 5 vs. 5 duels with other people. The mechanics are put together really well, so you may really like this game even if you’re not into the genre at all.

5. Fruit Ninja 2

Fruit Ninja 2

Could you expect that the new part of the once-extremely-popular game will hit the chart again? It came out 10 years after the first game and brought back everything we all liked so much, including the over-satisfying, never-boring slicing mechanics, bonuses, character customization, and a bunch of new stuff. The updates include better visuals, a rhythm-slicing mode called Fruitar Hero, and a roster of fresh characters. The game is in beta, so we can expect many more features to come out soon.

4. Prizefighters 2

Prizefighters 2

Prizefighters 2 is fully based on the Punch-Out gameplay but turns it into a standalone mobile boxing experience. The game reinvents the classics with intuitive controls and stylish 2D pixel art graphics. The whole thing is about fighting other boxers in the ring, but every enemy feels unique and makes you use your imagination and master skills to progress. There are no visible buttons, so playing is much more enjoyable than it was on 8-bit consoles and fits the touchscreen perfectly well.

3. ShadowFight Arena

ShadowFight Arena

The entire ShadowFight series has been on top of the charts for 9 years already. It evolved from a Flash Facebook game and became a full-fledged fighting title for mobile and desktop. Although you may think of it as a simplified Mortal Kombat game, it’s definitely not. There are tons of unique content, including the polished visual style, smooth animations, well-designed fighting mechanics, comprehensible tactics, exciting characters, and one of the catchiest leveling systems. Arena is the newest and the best chapter in the series so far.

2. Warpath

Warpath

Can you remember a good World War II strategy game for mobile? The concept isn’t original at all, which makes it even harder to make a good title, but Lilith Games managed to hit it well. The game is based in an alternate historical reality, so be ready for surprising twists mixed with historically accurate stories. The game also has a great retro RTS style with excellent effects, so it has enough power to keep you near the screen for hours.

1. A3: Still Alive

A3- Still Alive

This open-world MMO RPG can boast of multiple immersive gameplay modes, including a brain-racking battle royale mode and the classic PvP with all the best features you’d expect to see in a AAA PC title rather than in a mobile game. It’s currently the best mobile game in the entire genre, and it is not just a spin-off of another famous MMO but a stylish standalone thing stuffed with unique features and stories.
