Telegram, a messenger app like Whatsapp hasn’t had any monetization system so far and has been continuously funded personally by its founder, Pavel Durov. Today it is finally clear that a huge platform like that can’t run on an individual’s budget, even if it’s as big as Durov’s. But how will the new system work?
Changing The Path
In 2020, Pavel Durov said that monetizing a certain number of Telegram channels via any sort of ad system will potentially result in free traffic in proportion to the size of these channels. Despite that idea, the chairman is launching a monetizing system anyway, Sponsored Posts, which will let anyone promote their chatbots and channels. Many reporters are now criticizing Durov for changing his mind all of a sudden.
How It Works
The current version of Sponsored Posts is in a test phase and not available to everyone. However, we already know that the feature will be supported only by Telegram channels, which work similarly to average chats but serve for delivering messages to broad audiences. If you publish something in a channel, every subscriber will receive a notification, which is very convenient for media. Durov adds that the feature will not be available for channels with less than 1000 subscribers.
The good news is that sponsored content won’t ever appear in your app if you are not subscribed to particular channels. All your private threads will remain untouched. The founder hopes that the new feature will also help channel owners deliver ads in a more user-friendly and effective format instead of including ads in average messages. Finally, it’s good to hear that user data won’t be available for targeting.
Generous Update
Although Telegram will start charging money for sponsored content, it will also share ad revenue with admins of channels that display it. Durov says that it’s just a fair solution.
