Final Fantasy games have been available on mobile platforms for long, maybe even more popular now than they were when first released. And, despite a huge number of installments already made mobile, Square Enix hints at more of them – or even different versions of existing ones. A small change can mean a lot.
On Google Play and App Store, you can see now that the remade Final Fantasy III and IV now have a little addition on their icons, saying “3D Remake”. This does not mean any change in these games themselves; but why articulate that? The meaning of this may be quite different.
For example, the same games can be remade in 2D. This can make them less demanding in terms of performance and let the company sell them cheaper (effectively, sell them again). If you want these Final Fantasy games the way they originally were on SNES or the first PlayStation, you will probably prefer the unchanged pixeled up visuals to the new chibi-styled design. And this lets the publisher exploit the nostalgic value of these cult installments again. There may be even more, as Square Enix can make retro-styled remakes of later Final Fantasy installments, and we are already curious to see these. But what we have so far is two new names and two changed icons to draw our conclusions upon.
