While the current betas provide a closer look at what Apple is preparing for iOS 15, the Cupertino company can have something else up its sleeve. The most noticeable of these innovations deal with notifications, but there is more to it. So, let’s see what else iOS 15 will bring to justify its major status, given how much was delivered with iOS 14.5 and its powerful dash.
Messaging and Communication
Not that it’s strictly about iOS – rather about services and platforms. Still, FaceTime will become a cross-platform service, and iPhone/iPad users will be able to connect to those on Android or Windows. It’s a step into the arena where various video messaging apps compete, and it’s logical, as the competition gets hotter.
As for iMessage, it will remain an Apple exclusive, being an integral part of the intra-Apple experience. But it gets some updates too. For example, the new way to organize links and attachments will let you easier find out what you sent to which friend.
Big Siri is Listening to You
Yes, and now you won’t have to keep your iPhone screen on. It’s enough to have an Apple Watch on your wrist. Is it another selling point for Apple Watch, or a warning to those concerned with their privacy? Well, given how much privacy control is boosted in iOS 15, probably the former.
Stream of Dreams
If you build it, they will come – so they decide in Apple. Now they turn FaceTime into a local streaming platform that can share third-party content between its users. For example, you can create a group of your friends and watch a new episode of a Netflix show via FaceTime. The stream will run synced for anyone at the party as if you were in the cinema. The channel will also let you talk over what you’ve just seen or hear each other scream at jump scares. If the stream requires an app some members don’t have on their iDevices, they will be redirected to App Store. Of course, its future depends on collaboration with content providers, but Apple has built it, now they are to come.
Notifications
Even in iOS 14.6, notifications appear in quite an awkward way. In iOS 15, Notification Summary will deliver multiple notifications into one, so the user will be able to swipe them all away or open them in one tap. It will also be easier to read them all with a glance.
If you don’t want any notifications during a certain period, you will be able to Focus with an eponymous feature. Just choose the alert-free hours when you concentrate on your work, sports, hobby, or whatever that keeps you focused. The notifications will not bother you during that time.
Camera and Photos
Probably the most practical of the innovations is the Live Text – effectively, an optical character recognition engine that selects the text on pictures or live view and translates it in real-time. Not so many languages are supported so far, but it’s a great assistance if you at least know one of them.
If you like to meditate over your past, you will enjoy how Apple Music will combine with Photos to create clips that recreate moments you have lived. This audiovisual experience is based on your timeline and is not necessary. But as a nostalgic option, it’s quite pleasant to have.
Wallet
Last but not least: Wallet now supports more than credit cards and transport tickets. In iOS 15, you’ll be able to add hotel reservations, cars and other vehicles, and even smart home locks. In several American states, citizens will even be able to store their government IDs there.
Worth the Wait?
It’s quite a set of new features that will make you count hours until the new iOS is available. It’s even more exciting if you remember that all the iPhones that support iOS 14 will receive iOS 15 as well. Of course, some hardware-based features will not work on older devices, but still the upgrade will show.
