Grand Theft Auto V was released in 2013, but it still competes well with newer and more advanced games. With its rerelease on next-gen consoles, it sets sales records in Q1 2022, which comes as no surprise. The overall sales of GTA V now surpass 165M, being only outsold by Minecraft, while the entire franchise reached the number of 365M copies.
In the recent 8 years, Grand Theft Auto V became even more of a cultural phenomenon than its greatly influent predecessors. It featured popular artists (the most noticeable being Dr. Dre in the recent GTA Online update), created its own in-game radios with exclusive hits by rap, rock, and pop stars, and delivered thousands of iconic quotes. And while Rockstar Games has confirmed that GTA VI is already in development, the fifth installment will not give up easily.
With its release on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series S/X, GTA V becomes one of the rare trigenerational games, being available on three consequent console generations. This is far cry from the ubiquity shown by Minecraft, the only game that outsold GTA V, but would you really want to play such a spectacular game as GTA V on mobiles?
By the way, the second best-selling video game of that quarter in dollar equivalent is also by Rockstar Games, and it’s (you guessed correctly) Red Dead Redemption 2. The game has sold over 44 million copies, while the entire franchise sales reach 67 million. These long-running titles keep generating revenue, yet it means that Rockstar has no right to fail (like CDPR did with Cyberpunk 2077), and GTA VI needs to be flawless to live up to the expectations.
