Those who rely on apps on the road instead of a dashboard display won’t be too happy to hear about more changes when it comes to Google services in this area. In 2021, Google decided to stop the work of Android Auto on Android 12 and above. Just recently, it turned out that Assistant Driving Mode is no longer connecting to the Maps card. What is more, Google mentioned that they are now removing the dashboard view entirely.
According to the company, this change will take place on November 21st. From this date, users will no longer be able to access the dashboard view that first became available to users last summer. The functionality will be shifted into standard Maps navigation. As a result, users will see pop-ups for messages and incoming calls as opposed to opening the Driving Mode with a shortcut or a voice command.
The company explains its decision by the fact that the majority of drivers use Maps to interact with Assistant Driving Mode as opposed to relying on the actual dashboard. Such a change is understandable considering that Maps opens each time you enter your destination in Driving Mode. If you decide to navigate using the app directly, various features powered by Assistant will also open in Maps.
Admittedly, Driving Mode wasn’t an entirely thought-through project of Google, especially because there was no synchronization with the dashboard. Over the next months, it will become more obvious that these tools are connected to Maps rather than Assistant. Now, it seems that Android Auto will no longer be a thing, which means that a person will either need to have a dash display in their car or have Maps with the tools provided by Assistant.
