Facebook Messenger: Downloaded 5B Times on Android Only!

Making an app that’s downloaded a billion times is a dream of any developer. But how about a 5 billion downloader? Okay, here is another one in this very narrow club, and it’s Facebook Messenger. The standalone chat and audio/video call app reached 5 billion downloads on May 9, 2021.

It took the app a little more than seven year to reach this extremely high mark. First the audience disapproved on separating Messenger from the main Facebook app. It caused many users to prefer Facebook Lite that retained the built-in chat features, but this version didn’t even come close in terms of popularity. Even the most budget of Android smartphones in 2021 are able to host both Facebook and Messenger apps, and many users install them right after they unpack a new device.

There are only two developers so far whose apps reach a 5-billion mark. Eleven out of fourteen five-billionaire apps are published by Google (most of them come preinstalled). Facebook occupies the rest of the list with the main social media client, Facebook Messenger, and WhatsApp. Probably Instagram will be the next one to enter the club, but no one knows when it’s going to happen. The second most probable rival is TikTok, especially if its ban in India is called off.
